In 2002 I was asked by an associate to travel to Panama to evaluate some real estate. As typical for an American at that time, I had not considered Panama as an option for vacation or investment. But dozens of stories of phenomenal fishing, by my former captain, tempted me to consider the request. Hoping for a quick fishing trip I went along to advise them on that deal. I didn’t get to go fishing (in fact it was two years later before I did), and that deal fell through, but I instantly fell in love with the country and its people. Having traveled extensively in Mexico, and the Caribbean for fishing tournaments, I had never experienced such genuine warmth and familiarity outside the US, certainly not in those days. The next two years were spent scouring most of the undeveloped Pacific Coast of Panama by plane, helicopter, boat—even John Deere tractor—looking for that elusive natural harbor that rarely occurs on the Pacific side and the right setting for a small development to combine Panama’s unrivaled fishing, its unmatched natural beauty, and most of all its wonderful hospitality. I found that setting when I arrived at Los Buzos. Little did I know at that point the adventure had only begun. It took three years to reach my goal of developing a small resort area showcasing the best of what Panama has to offer in a format comfortable to conservative American investors.
